The Whig Convention & Election of 1848
When the Whig party met at its convention in June of 1848, the delegates nominated General Zachary Taylor to represent its party in the presidential election that November. One of the delegates present in Philadelphia that week was Abraham Lincoln. Despite the fact that his long-time mentor and Whig standard-bearer Henry Clay was seeking the nomination, Lincoln actively supported the nomination of Zachary Taylor. Upon his return to Washington, DC Lincoln wrote his law partner William Herndon, expressing his views about the viability of Taylor's campaign.
